From November to May, step into a hidden winter world on Svalbard where ice caves come alive. Formed by powerful summer meltwater rivers and frozen solid through winter, these caves reveal shimmering blue walls, winding tunnels, and sparkling ice crystals—an otherworldly landscape few ever see. The adventure begins with a scenic two hour uphill hike across rugged moraine terrain, ascending about 400 meters towards the glacier. Depending on conditions, we travel on snowshoes or firm snow until the cave entrance comes into view. Equipped with helmets, spikes, and headlamps, we descend into the calm, frozen interior, where the temperature rests around a surprisingly mild 0 °C. Inside the cave, your guide shares stories of glacier life and Svalbard’s unique geology as we explore, pause for a warm drink and lunch, and soak in the quiet magic before hiking back. Not suitable for those with back problems or claustrophobia.
